General Sir John Aitchison GCB (25 April 1779 - 12 May 1875) was a British Army officer.
Military career[edit]
Aitchison was commissioned at 16 into the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards, later to be the Scots Guards. He took part in the crossing of the River Douro during the Peninsular War.[1] He fought at the Battle of Talavera in July 1809, the Battle of Bussaco in September 1810 and the Battle of Salamanca in July 1812 before seeing action at the Battle of Vitoria in June 1813, the Siege of San Sebastián in July 1813 and the Battle of Nivelle in November 1813.[1] He also fought at the Battle of the Nive in December 1813 and Battle of Bayonne in April 1814 and went on to become Major General on the staff of the Madras Presidency in 1845.[1]
He was colonel of the 72nd Regiment, Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders from 1851 to 1870 and of the Scots Fusilier Guards from 1870 to his death.[2] He was promoted full general on 30 July 1860.[3]
He died in 1875 and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in a mausoleum west of the main chapel.[1] He had married Ellen Elizabeth and had one son, Archibald John Aitchison.[4]

Medical Information: Had treatment for liver problems and was given mercury, (from his letters to John RENNIE engineer - kept in the National Library of Scotland).

Presented at court: 1830, Whilst a Captain he was a Court Levee.
Travels: Bet. 1812 - 1813, John Rennie (later Sir John Rennie) and John Aitchison travelled Europe together between 1812-1813. Extensive correspondense between them and John RENNIE Snr describing their journey together.
William Aitchison of Drummore wrote to John RENNIE in London on 28 March 1814 advising him of the death of George Mylne who died on 24th inst. letter includes discussion concerning the future of the services following the end of the Napoleonic war. He wonders whether John could find out what the Government plans were likely to be. He says he plans to buy a Regiment of his own and expects it will cost him around £5,000.

Described in The Scotsman as "..that gallent soldier and truly excellent man, Colonel Aitchison of the Scots Fusilier Guards" 6 November 1841

Above the mausoleum it says "Mausoluem of General Sir John Aitchison GCB"
The main inscription started "In the vault of the mausoleum repose the mortal remains of John Aitchisopn, GCB Born on 27th April 1789 Died on 12th May 1875. Entering the 3rd guards now styled Scots Guards at the age of 16 in 1805......"
Also "To the glory of God and in loving memory of Archibald John Thomas Francis Aitchison the beloved husband of Evelyn Aitchison and only son of General Sir John Aitchison GCB Born 11th November 1861 entered into rest 12th June 1908. With Christ which is far better"
